# Stair Stringer Layout > A browser tool for laying out a straight, cut wood stair stringer from measured rise, run and lumber dimensions. Free geometry, drawings and a 1:1 marking-template PDF; an optional paid build pack adds whole-stair material planning. ## Tool scope - Inputs are typed measurements, not uploaded files. There is no PDF, image, CAD or spreadsheet import. - Select inches or millimeters. Numeric inputs accept whole numbers, decimals and fractions such as `36 1/2`; values use the selected unit. Feet-and-inches notation is not supported. - Enter total rise and either available total run or a whole number of treads. Tread-count mode uses a 10 1/2 in tread in inch mode or 267 mm in metric mode. - Set tread and riser-board thickness, nosing, top-mount choice and lumber depth. Stock choices are 2x10, 2x12, 2x14 or a custom actual depth; a riser-board thickness of zero means open risers. - Use cases include straight deck stairs, patio step-downs and straight floor-to-floor stairs. The tool does not design winders, spiral stairs or structural connections, size lumber for loads, or certify code compliance. Code and comfort checks are reference hints. ## Free and paid outputs - Free: riser height and count, tread depth and count, pitch, throat, bottom-riser cut, stringer cut length, a marked board drawing, side view, 3D preview and copyable marking points. - Free download: a tiled 1:1 marking-template PDF for US Letter or A4, with a tile map, alignment marks and print-scale check. Print at 100% / Actual size and measure the check square before use. - Paid build pack: $3 USD once for 24 hours of unlimited build-pack downloads in the purchasing browser; no subscription. Applicable taxes are calculated at checkout. Includes width-based stringer count and spacing, cut list, tread rip widths, stringer position plan, lumber cutting plan, shopping list with estimated costs and a job-sheet PDF. It does not replace the free marking-template PDF. - Material costs are estimates, not current supplier quotes. Local construction requirements and a qualified professional determine what can be built. ## Reproducible example - Inputs: 36 in total rise, 48 in total run, deck as top step, 2x12 stringer with 11 1/4 in actual depth, 1 in tread thickness, 3/4 in riser-board thickness and 1 in nosing. - Outputs: 5 risers at 7.20 in, 4 treads at 12.00 in, 31.0 degree pitch, 5.08 in throat, 6.20 in bottom-riser cut and 59.17 in finished stringer cut length. Decimal outputs are rounded to two places; the tool also provides inch readings rounded to 1/16 in. These are calculator results, not a certified or completed construction project. ## Primary pages - [Calculator, supported inputs and worked output](https://stairstringerlayout.com/#inputs-and-outputs): formats, use cases, free and paid boundaries, and a reproducible output table. - [Open the 36 in rise / 48 in run example](https://stairstringerlayout.com/?rise=36&run=48&tt=1&rt=0.75&lumber=2x12&top=below&nose=1): prefilled calculator inputs. - [Build pack and pricing](https://stairstringerlayout.com/pricing): current offer, exact included outputs, and a computed cut-list and shopping-list sample. - [Six worked layout examples](https://stairstringerlayout.com/stringer-layout-examples): board diagrams, side views and calculated dimensions for common rises. - [Stair stringer formulas](https://stairstringerlayout.com/stair-stringer-formulas): calculation methods and a worked 36 in / 48 in example. - [How to lay out a stair stringer](https://stairstringerlayout.com/how-to-lay-out-a-stair-stringer): marking sequence and print-template guidance. - [Rise and run reference table](https://stairstringerlayout.com/stair-rise-run-reference): calculated reference layouts for different rises. ## Policies and support - [Refund policy](https://stairstringerlayout.com/refund-policy) - [Privacy](https://stairstringerlayout.com/privacy) - [Terms](https://stairstringerlayout.com/terms) - [Contact](https://stairstringerlayout.com/contact)
